Have you ever had a secret desire to try your hand at painting, but never had the opportunity, or perhaps never got that little nudge of encouragement? If so, then Jim Kavanagh is the answer to your prayers. As one who never studied Art at school, I first encountered Jim some ten years ago and his classes have enriched my life in a way I could never have imagined. Jim is a pure natural, a born teacher who demystifies the art of painting and works with each student individually. Jim has that precious ability to bring out the best in each student regardless of his or her age, educational background or ability. His down-to-earth, constructive and good-humoured approach make his classes a joy.

I have been attending the art school for 6 years and really look forward to each class. The classes are small, relaxed and thoroughly enjoyable in a warm inviting studio. Jim ensures that along with learning to paint that fun is had at all the classes, and art history is covered during coffee breaks. Jim has a great teaching style, he makes everyone feel so welcome, he is very positive, patient and encouraging to all students. I highly recommend the classes to anyone with any level of experience or skills, you’ll love them.

I started at Jim’s School of Art some years ago never having painted in oils only watercolour. With his encouragement and excellent tutoring I have not only become fairly proficient in oils but have improved in my drawing skills and in colour theory. The other students I met are all very friendly and classes became a fun learning experience. A break for tea, coffee and cake/biscuits gives Jim an opportunity to give talks on artists past and present with critiques on how he views them, all of which is very informative both about the artists but also about their different styles and approaches The Studio is spacious, welcoming and well equipped. I can highly recommend his Art School for anyone who is interested in being taught by a talented and intelligent artist.

I’ve been going out to Jim Kavanagh’s art school for 11 years even though I paint at home. I have a degree in art history too but Jim always has something more to teach me and he always challenges my practice. What I really like about Jim as a teacher is the discipline he insists on. Jim has taught at third level and I feel I’m in a real art school and he is a practicing artist. Jim shoots from the hip! It’s fantastic fun but at the same time he really motivates me and criticises. Jim has scintillating wit and provides excellent Italian coffee and quality biscuits. He gives his own art history lectures from his unique view and experience. I always feel enthusiastic and motivated when I leave the class. I totally recommend this to anyone who wants to progress in their practice.

I love going to the Jim’s Art School as I have a set amount of time to just paint - something I somehow never have time for otherwise! Jim is an excellent teacher who - through ongoing encouragement and support - has turned me from barely able to draw into someone who proudly displays her paintings. I hope he continues teaching for many more years - not just for the opportunity to learn but also for the fun of it!

Yearning to learn the skill of painting, I had the good fortune to encounter Jim Kavanagh Galway Art Classes. Jim is an expert artist, teacher and mentor. He is generous in sharing his vast knowledge of art history and the craft of painting. In a structured yet relaxed environment, I receive individual attention while also being supported by classmates. Jim has the rare ability to impart valuable, informative feedback and constructive criticism without assailing the ego. Art classes with Jim prove to be mini therapy sessions, where I am challenged , often frustrated, a place where I can lose and find myself, eventually feeling a sense of accomplishment and self actualisation. High standards are achieved with the aid of great coffee, biscuits and of course eclectic music!

I started art classes in 2016 a complete novice. I really enjoy the classes and have a renewed appreciation of art. I now have knowledge of perspective and colour theory, both of which have helped to improve my other passion Photography. The art class has made me look at things more closely and appreciate the subtle structure, shadowing and colours. And of course the best coffee and biscuits!
